Panama City Isn’t Just A Beach, It’s A Destination For Tech Startups

As summer draws to a close and fall and winter draw near, local tech startups prepare for the long road ahead.

Although Panama City is known for its hot summers, beautiful beaches, and spring breakers, it is becoming renowned along the Emerald Coast for its ability to launch successful technology businesses. The Business Innovation Center (BIC) on the FSU satellite campus and TechFarms, LLC, an independent for profit entity, both serve as incubators for tech startups in this community.

Hive Technologies (www.hivetechnologies.net), led by Rick Hurst and connected with TechFarms, is a tech company on the forefront of disrupting technologies of today while inventing the technologies of tomorrow.  During a recent conversation with Rick, he shared his vision for a housekeeping management system and related mobile app that will increase productivity & profitability in the local tourism industry.  Housekeeping management is at the core of any hotel or rental property operations and can make the difference between a reputed property and one that guests are unlikely to visit again. The many thousands of vacation properties in the Panama City area and millions more across the state of Florida have always drawn tourists because of the warm climate and array of outdoor activities.  Rick has combined his local connections, experience as a software engineer, knowledge as a professor, and personal experience as a tourist to create a product that will disrupt what is currently offered in this market.

Hive Technologies is an innovative company that works and plays in Panama City, Florida. The Hive team of experienced and dedicated engineers work with clients to create hardware or software solutions.  Whether as a consultant or a partnership, they can develop native, mobile, or web applications, integrate existing applications and data sources, or document hardware and software solutions.  They work closely with clients to understand your needs, design a custom solution, and deliver outstanding results. The company was founded on the slogan “for the good of the Hive” which represents activities that benefit the greater good of the community rather than individual pursuits.

Hive Technologies not only delivers outstanding technology solutions, but the company also takes seriously their responsibility to the community.  While Hive is busy developing new products & applications, they are also teaching free technology classes at CareerSource Gulf Coast Job Center.  This is just one bridge built to connect necessary talent with jobs in the Gulf Coast area. Hive Technologies realizes many local graduates leave after graduation because of the perception there are no local technology opportunities, which has the corollary effect of leaving local tech companies devoid of tech talent.  After watching isolated attempts at solving this issue, Hurst’s hope is that Hive Technologies brings the community’s technical and non-technical citizens together to solve the problem.

Building community, disrupting technology, and inventing the technology of tomorrow.  That’s what’s happening in Bay County with the Hive Technologies team at TechFarms.
